Part-I

Suchitra Sen is perpahs the most popular Bangla film actress to date. She was born in the northern district Pabna in April of 1931, her family migrated to India during partition of the subcontinent in 1947. She spend her early parts of childhood days in Pabna, she also studied in a local school there.

The partition of the subcontinent changed the scenario, many Hindus migrated to India and many Muslims migrated to then Pakistan leaving their homes and many valuable properties. Suchitra Sen’s family had to leave their house in Pabna.

After 1947 Pakistan government regarded these properties as enemy properties and leased to different peoples who were in need of lands and houses. After 1971 Bangladesh government continued the same policy but used the term ‘vested property’ instead of enemy property.

Suchitra Sen’s family house was also the same case. But various cultural organizations demanded this house should not be treated like others. It’s part of our history and culture. Debate over the vested property act also rose.

1987 Gazzali trust leased the house from the government which was cancelled by the government in 2009. But the trust filed a writ to the high court and got a stay order which is still in place.

Now the trust is running Imam Gazzali trust institute in the house where they made some corrugated iron sheet rooms. – (continued…)
