In Bangladesh there was a time when people were happy enough if they were able to send a plain text e-mail over the internet. Now situation has changed, every university has internet connection and speed in far better than the early days. But still the speed is not satisfactory for the researchers and academics.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a World Bank financed project to provide high speed internet connection where two dark fibers (a fiber optic cable that is not transmitting a signal) of Power Grid Company will be used.
A new network which will be called Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) will be established in a bid to increase interconnectivity among local and foreign universities. It will also help to stimulate teaching, improve learning, boost research and bring accountability; hence will help proper utilization of fund.
This $ 81 million project implementation is already started. Network Operation Centre set up at the UGC is begun; points of presence have been created in six universities.
