Bangladesh Bank (BB) is taking action against 10 banks for selling dollars to importers at a price higher than the declared value. Under this, the Central Bank has started the process of imposing fine on the heads of treasury departments of these banks. In letters sent to these banks on Monday, Bibi said that there is no way for the heads of the Treasury Department to escape responsibility.
The treasury department of banks oversees the demand and supply of dollars and taka in the bank. In some banks, officers at the level of Deputy Managing Director head the treasury department.
According to various sources, the 10 banks facing investigation are Mercantile Bank, Premier Bank, BRAC Bank, Modhumoti Bank, Midland Bank, Exim Bank, Social Islami Bank, Al-Arafa Islami Bank, Shahjalal Islami Bank and Trust Bank. Sources also say that the number of banks coming under investigation may increase in future.
