A housewife was strangulated to death allegedly by her in-laws over dowry Thursday night at her residence in Section-6 of Mirpur.
Shahnaz Begum, 22, was the wife of Mohammad Rubel, a driver at Milk Vita company.
Rubel’s mother Nurjahan Begum was arrested after the victim’s sister filed a murder case. Rubel has been hiding since the incident.
Police recovered the body around 1:00am from the house and sent it to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Locals said Rubel beat up Shahnaz on Thursday as one of her five-year-old nephews, Rafi, who lives with his parents in the same area, came to visit her.
Rubel’s mother Nurjahan told police Shahnaz locked her bedroom’s door from inside and hanged herself with a scarf from the ceiling fan. They called in a doctor after rescuing her, but the doctor declared her dead.
Victim’s cousin Aminul Islam Liton, however, claimed Shahnaz’s in-laws strangled her to death showing injury marks on her neck. Rubel had always been threatening Shahnaz not to continue any relation with her family members and relatives as he failed to realise Tk 2 lakh from them.
Rubel and his family members were demanding the amount as ‘dowry’ after their marriage one year back, he added.
Officer-in-Charge Shahabuddin Khalifa of Pallabi Police Station said Shahnaz’s sister Rehana Begum filed a murder case with the police station yesterday accusing Rubel and his mother.
