Ghulam Yazdani, executive engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), was assigned the responsibility as the director of the project from the Ministry of Local Government on August 14 last year. Last November, tenders were invited for the first phase of the Tk 2.2 billion project in 37 lots.
The project includes various development works including construction of overpasses, roads, foot bridges, culverts and roundabouts. It is alleged that the contractor managed to grab the work by manipulating the last two project directors.
We have seen friendship between PD and contractors so far. Friendship develops for dishonest gain. We must applaud Ghulam Yajdani, Project Director, Chattogram Municipal Corporation, for breaking the vicious cycle and giving the work to the contractors following proper rules.
The government and the municipal corporation should ensure its safety. Also, action should be taken against the contractors who lay hands on them accordingly. Three contractors have been arrested and sent to jail. The rest should be brought under the purview of the law. This practice of mob gathering and violence should stop.
