Expelled students of Asian University for Women formed a human chain in front of Chittagong press club yesterday. Some prominent intellectuals including professor emeritus Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam of Chittagong University was present there. Dr. Jamal Nazrul Islam said, Asian University for Women failed to keep their promise. No rules were followed in the expulsion process of these students and the university is still lacking proper facilities for students.
Among the expelled students 8 are Bangladeshi, 2 Sri Lankan and 1 Indian student. The students say, they were not told before that they will be expelled if they do not perform well in the exam. They are terming this expulsion as an unlawful action.
Earlier on 7th July, about 60 foreign and local students demonstrated against the decision of the university authority. A meeting between city mayor and the university on 9th July failed to solve the problem.
Vice-chancellor of the university Mary J Sansalone says, they were compelled to expel those students due to their poor academic performance.
Asian University for Women was established at Chittagong about 3 and half years ago, promising to offer world class education for Asian women and hence contributing empowerment of women.
