The family of Faheem Ahmed (20), of Kabirnagar village in Bogalabazar union of Dovarabazar upazila, had tried to send him to Greece through a relative. But Faheem also died on that boat in the sea. No one in the family talked about this broker.
However, local residents said that Faheem’s maternal uncle Jamal Uddin sends people to Greece via Libya. Jamal Uddin has another brother, Abdur Rahim, also known as Jasim Uddin, in Libya. It is learned that both the brothers have cases against them in the Anti Human Trafficking Crime Tribunal in Sunamganj.
This time he had also sent many other people from the area along with Faheem. One of those families paid 1.4 million taka. When Jamal Uddin was contacted on mobile phone for comment, he did not receive the call. Faheem’s uncle Taijul Islam said over the phone on Monday afternoon, ‘Actually we were not in favor of sending Faheem abroad illegally like this.’ He didn’t want to say anything more than that.
Bogalabazar Union Parishad President Mohammad Milan Khan said many people from the area are going to Europe illegally, lured by human trafficking syndicates, in the hope of a better life.
