Indian and Pakistani soldiers has exchanged fire at de facto international border known as line of control (LoC) today. Indian media has accused that Pakistan has broken ceasefire along the line of control. Indian media has also reported, an Indian soldier was killed and Indian troops have retaliated with their guns. Exchange of fire and heavy artillery shells are not rare in this disputed border area, which is also one of the most militarized zones of the world.
Pakistan is the only country of the subcontinent who challenged Indian aggressive big brother attitude. They have fought several wars in the past. Claims of killing each other’s soldiers and claims of killing civilians by opponents is a common news from this region. Especially after the recent move in which India has stripped autonomy of Indian occupied Kashmir, tension is very high in the border area.
During the separation in 1947 Pakistan has claimed that flowing the tow nation theory, Muslim majority Kashmir should be part of Pakistan. But India denied the claim and annexed Kashmir to it’s territory. Pakistan managed to grip one third of Kashmir militarily and Indian then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru categorically promised, he will arrange a referendum so that people of Kashmir can decide which side of the border they want to join.
But that referendum was never allowed by Indian government and started an oppressive administration with its military force. Pakistan never let it unchallenged, complained the matter to the UN.
Kashmiri people on the other hand are now struggling for independence and they think cancelling the referendum was a historic denial of their rights. Many Kashmiri youths have joined fighting for independence and Indian media are terming this struggle for independence as Islamic terrorism.
