“Joint inspections are being conducted across the country as per standard operating procedures,” the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a statement. “This will ensure higher standards of quality compliance with respect to drugs manufactured in the country.”
The ministry said it was inspecting “pharmaceutical manufacturing units” that were at risk of manufacturing non-standard, adulterated or counterfeit drugs, but did not name any companies.
Some health experts say India’s drug regulations are lax, especially at the state level where thousands of factories operate.
In October, the government suspended all production of Maiden, based in the state of Haryana, for violating manufacturing standards.
