Indian Election Commissioner resigns before announcement of polling date

According to its website, the Election Commission's decisions are taken by majority vote among three commissioners, each of whom has a tenure of six years or until the age of 65.

After the retirement of Anoop Chandra Pandey as commissioner last month, the electoral body is now left with only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and several opposition parties have expressed concern over Goyal's resignation.

“There is now only one Election Commissioner in India, even though…elections are to be announced in a few days. Why?” Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the main opposition party Congress, asked on the social media platform.
