India’s top court on Tuesday said it cannot legalize gay marriage, with the country’s Chief Justice saying it is Parliament’s domain to make such a law.
A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud heard arguments in the case between April and May this year and delivered its verdict on Tuesday.
As Chandrachud began reading his ruling, he said there was some “agreement and disagreement” on gay marriage about how far we have to go.
Two of the other four justices agreed with Chandrachud that the court would not legalize gay marriage, thereby forming a majority.
