The junta said that prisoners used sticks, bricks and pieces of cement to attack security forces.
The officials tried to bring the situation under control but talks failed and they resorted to force.
“Officers opened fire to disperse the crowd and bring the riot under control,” the statement said.
The junta said that one prisoner was killed “in the midst of fighting” and 63 prisoners were injured, along with two police and nine guards.
Local media described the dead prisoner as a political prisoner and BBC Burmese said he was on terrorism charges.
