The internal rift in the Awami League has intensified centering on the upcoming upazila elections as grassroots leaders-activists have accused ministers-MPs of interfering in the elections. In the meeting with the central leadership of the party, the grassroots leaders also accused the ministers and MLAs of interfering in the local politics of the ruling party.
Grassroots leaders of Chattogram demanded that the Awami League nominate single candidates in the upazila elections to reduce internal conflict. However, he did not get any decision in this regard from ruling party general secretary Obaidul Quader. But the AL general secretary sent a strong message to ministers, MPs and influential leaders not to have any influence in the elections.
The meeting between the Awami League general secretary and MPs and leaders of Chattogram division was held at the Dhaka District AL office in Tejgaon in the city on Sunday. Chattogram District South AL President Abdus Salam, Cox's Bazar District President Faridul Islam Choudhary, Noakhali District President AHM Khairul Anam and several other leaders spoke in favor of electing a single candidate from the party.
The meeting was presided over by AL Presidium member Mosharraf Hussain.
