Sub Inspector Nausher Qureshi of Kotwali police station, Chattogram is the investigating officer in the case of rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl. He told Prothom Alo that the matter has been investigated. The application seeking DNA test report was submitted soon after the death of the child in October, 2022 but the report has not come yet. That is why the concerned people are not giving the post mortem report. Due to this the investigation is not being completed. Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Inspector Mohammad Zakir Hussain, who is investigating the death of a 10-year-old boy in Cumilla, also shared a similar problem.

Until recently, DNA tests were conducted at the Forensic DNA Laboratory of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the National Forensic DNA Profiling Laboratory near Dhaka Medical College Hospital. CID's lab is operational, but the other lab is closed for about a month. The closed laboratory was run under the Multi-Sector Program of the Department of DNA Laboratory Management under the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs. The Danish International Development Agency (Danida) was funding this work until recently. However, funding has stopped as the ministry's contract with DANIDA has expired. An official associated with the project said that the test was stopped due to shortage of reagents.

Therefore, right now there is only one laboratory for DNA testing of all cases in the entire country. The CID lab has the capacity for DNA profiling of 20 samples per day. Special Superintendent of Police Imran Bhuiyan, who is in charge of that lab, told Prothom Alo that they receive about 10,000 cases for DNA testing every year. According to these figures, the daily number of cases is more than 33. As a result, testing and preparing reports takes a lot of time.
