air ‘unbreathable’
Israel attacked five oil facilities in and around Tehran early Sunday, killing at least four people and sparking fires that filled the sky with acrid smoke.
Tehran’s governor told IRNA news agency that fuel deliveries in the capital had been “temporarily disrupted”.
A black smog hung over the city of 10 million people, blocking out the sun and the smell of burning fuel lingering in the air.
Authorities warned that the smoke could be poisonous and urged citizens to stay indoors, but the force of the explosions blew out many windows.
“The fire has been burning for more than 12 hours, the air has become unbreathable. I can’t even go out for daily shopping,” said a 35-year-old man from Tehran.
“At first, I supported this war. After Khamenei’s death, I celebrated with my friends: we drank and we danced.
“But since yesterday…people are saying there is no gasoline left at gas stations,” he said in a text message to contacts in Europe.
