Israel warned that Hezbollah would attack the region if it attacked northern Israel, and the group later confirmed launching missiles and drones at a pair of Israeli army barracks on Sunday morning.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker and its chief negotiator in talks with Washington, accused the US of giving the “green light” for the Beirut attack, saying US and Israeli assets were now “legitimate targets”.
The head of Iran’s military Central Command said Israel had “crossed all red lines” with the Beirut attack, and called on it to halt its operations in Lebanon.
“Tonight’s operation (against Israel) was a warning,” the Revolutionary Guards said. “If such aggression is repeated, the responses will be comprehensive and cover all American-Zionist targets in the region.”
Soon after the attack, Iran announced it was closing its airspace over the west of the country, while neighboring Iraq and nearby Syria followed suit.
Tehran has also suspended all flights arriving at its international airport, local media reported on Sunday.
