Iran’s Raisi promises crackdown on protesters

According to his website, Molawi Abdolhamid, an outspoken Sunni cleric in the Shiite-ruled Islamic republic, criticized the death penalty.

Molawi Abdolhamid said, “When someone has not committed murder but has only blocked a road and wounded a Basij (militia) member with a knife, he cannot be put to death under Shari’a. “

Addressing the officers, he said, “Listen to these protests and negotiate with the people of Iran. It is not right to beat, beat and kill this country. Killing people will not quell this protest.”

State media published a video of Shekhri’s confession in which he is seen with a scar on his right cheek. He admitted to attacking a member of the Basij militia with a knife and blocking a road with a friend on a motorcycle.

Human rights groups said that Shekhri was tortured and forced to confess.

A video widely shared on social media showed protesters shouting from the rooftops of northern Tehran late into the night, “We are all Mohsen” and “Khamenei is a murderer” – a reference to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei .

Another video shows people lighting candles in front of Shekhri’s house late Friday night. Reuters could not immediately verify the video.

In Geneva, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called the execution “deeply disturbing and clearly designed to send a chilling effect to the rest of the protesters”. He called on the Iranian authorities to immediately put an end to the death penalty.
