The Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and the militant Islamic Jihad group officially went into effect late Saturday, with the deal meant to end the worst cross-border fire since the 10-Day War in 2021.
As the fighting subsided, the streets of Gaza, which were largely deserted, filled with Palestinians. Some cheered and honked car horns, while others marched to the homes of those killed in the fighting to show their respect.
“In light of the agreement between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, Egypt announces a ceasefire between the Palestinian and Israeli sides,” read a text of the agreement seen by Reuters.
It added, “Both sides shall abide by the ceasefire, which shall include the cessation of targeting of civilians, demolition of houses, targeting of people immediately after the ceasefire comes into force.”
