Israel removes plastic tax despite environmental benefits

Israel’s new far-right government said on Sunday it has scrapped a year-old tax that significantly reduced consumption of single-use plastic plates and utensils.

The decision, in apparent defiance of global efforts to reduce the amount of plastic waste polluting the oceans, came after opposition to the levy from religious parties, who said it unfairly targeted their communities.
