Israel resumes attack on Gaza after rockets were fired

In Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, a Reuters witness said he could hear heavy shelling and see smoke rising east of the town. He said people were fleeing to camps west of Khan Yunis to hide from the area.

Al-Jazeera reported that several people were killed and injured in the Israeli raid and shelling.

The Israeli military confirmed that its jets were attacking Hamas positions in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that with the resumption of fighting, Israel remains committed to achieving its goals in the war.

Pictures on social media show a huge plume of black smoke rising over the densely populated Jabaliya camp in Gaza.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas, which rules Gaza, in response to an attack by the terrorist group on October 7, when Israel says gunmen killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages.

Israel responded with intense bombing and ground attacks. Palestinian health officials, considered credible by the United Nations, say more than 15,000 Gazans are confirmed dead.
