Police have arrested Mohammad Mohibullah, a suspected leader of Islamic militant group Jamaatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, in Dhaka.
After arresting Mohibullah at the capital’s Syedabad bus terminal on Tuesday night, the police’s counter-terrorism and international crimes unit said he was the naib-e-amir, or second-in-command, of the organisation.
CTTC Chief Additional Commissioner Mohammad Asaduzzaman told a press conference that Mohibullah, Jamaatul Ansar co-founder Shamin Mahfouz and another leader of the group, Dr. Shakir bin Wali, had left Bandarban in January 2022 to visit their training camp in the remote hills. He met Nathan Bavam, chief of tribal separatist group Kuki-Chin National Front or Bavam Party, and other leaders of the organization there, Asaduzzaman said. The Jamatul Ansar had reportedly set up camp with the help of the Bavam party.
