Japan faces pressure over G7 fossil fuels in climate talks

However, as the energy crisis triggered by the Ukraine war squeezes the G7 countries, including this year’s President Japan, divisions have arisen within the grouping.

A French government source said his ministers were trying to “avoid or prevent any reversal on fossil fuels”, describing “difficult” discussions between the bloc.

The draft statement calls on nations to take action “in this critical decade”, urging a peak in global greenhouse emissions by 2025 at the latest.

Experts say the language is aimed at China, the world’s biggest carbon emitter, which is targeting to peak its carbon emissions by 2030.

The draft also stresses the “urgency” of reducing global emissions by 60 percent by 2035 from 2019 levels, as recommended by the UN’s IPCC panel of climate experts.

Ministers pledged to largely phase out fossil fuel use in their power sectors by 2035 at the last G7 climate ministerial meeting in Germany in May 2022.
