Jatiya Party objects to ‘anchor’ election symbol given to Bangladesh Nationalist Movement

Japa’s election symbol is ‘Hal’, in Bengali it is ‘Langol’. The word for ‘anchor’ in Bengali is ‘nongor’, which is similar in sound. Then again, the icons are similar in appearance. If both of these symbols are put on the same ballot, voters may be confused, especially those with poor eyesight.

The letter also states that once a political party was assigned the ‘ship’ election symbol. Since the symbols ‘ship’ and ‘boat’ looked identical on the ballot paper, objections were raised and the symbol ‘ship’ was removed.
