Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested on Thursday, October 17, in Franklin, Tennessee, on multiple charges, including driving under the influence (DUI) and illegally possessing a weapon while intoxicated. The 41-year-old Cutler, known for his stints with the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, and Denver Broncos, allegedly rear-ended another vehicle in downtown Franklin before attempting to flee the scene.
According to charging documents obtained by PEOPLE, Cutler’s troubles began when he struck the back of another car, prompting the driver to call for assistance. In an attempt to avoid police involvement, Cutler allegedly offered the other driver $2,000 to forgo reporting the incident. However, his efforts were in vain as police arrived shortly after.

Officers at the scene observed Cutler displaying signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes and a strong smell of alcohol. In a statement released on Friday morning, a spokesperson for the Franklin Police Department noted that Cutler was charged with DUI, illegally possessing a weapon while intoxicated, implied consent violation, and failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision.
Upon arrival, the arresting officer reported that Cutler appeared to be staggering and swaying as he walked. The affidavit described Cutler’s speech as slurred and thick-tongued, and it noted that his eyes were bloodshot, glassy, and dilated. When questioned about his alcohol consumption, Cutler initially denied drinking but later admitted to having “a little bit.” After refusing to participate in a field sobriety test, Cutler was taken into custody.
Following his arrest, officers obtained a blood search warrant to test Cutler’s blood alcohol content at Williamson Medical Center. In addition to the DUI charges, police discovered a rifle in the back seat of Cutler’s vehicle and a loaded Glock handgun in the center console during a search of the truck.
Interestingly, while Cutler denied being involved in the crash, officers found a small dent on the rear of the other vehicle. The officer noted that Cutler’s truck had a winch on the front, which concealed any damage that may have resulted from the collision.
Cutler was later released from jail on a $5,000 bond. As of now, he has not publicly commented on the incident, and PEOPLE has reached out to his representatives for further clarification.
Cutler’s NFL career spanned 12 seasons, during which he became a recognizable figure in the league. He married former Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari in 2013, and their relationship was documented in the reality TV series Very Cavallari, which aired from 2018 to 2020. The couple shares three children: Camden, 11, Jaxon, 9, and Saylor, 8.
In 2020, Cavallari filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences” and “inappropriate marital conduct” as reasons for the split. In court documents, Cavallari alleged that Cutler’s actions rendered their cohabitation unsafe and improper, while she also claimed any misconduct on her part was in response to his behavior.
Cutler is scheduled to appear in court on January 16, 2025, to face the charges related to his DUI and weapon possession. The former athlete’s legal issues raise concerns about his post-NFL life, as he has transitioned from a celebrated sports figure to a more contentious public persona.
As the case develops, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact Cutler’s future, both legally and personally. The ramifications of his actions could extend beyond the courtroom, affecting his relationships with his children, former spouse, and the public perception of him as a role model.
This arrest marks a significant chapter in Cutler’s life, showcasing the challenges he faces after his football career. Fans and observers will undoubtedly be watching as the legal proceedings unfold and as Cutler navigates the consequences of his actions.
In a world where athletes often find themselves in the spotlight, Cutler’s situation serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with fame. His past successes on the field now seem overshadowed by this troubling incident, leaving many to wonder what the future holds for the former star quarterback.
