The Dhaka University (DU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has submitted a memorandum to the university administration, raising several demands, including ensuring accommodation for first-year students and taking action against those involved in torture in guest rooms and Gana rooms in previous years.
The memorandum was submitted to the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University on Tuesday at noon.
Later, at a press conference, JCD DU unit General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon alleged that after August 5, a certain student organization had secretly engaged in politics from within the Bangladesh Chhatra League and was directly involved in the torture of students through guest room and Gana room practices. He claimed that they have already obtained evidence supporting these allegations and identified the organization as Islami Chhatra Shibir.
He further stated that recent incidents in different residential halls, including records of guest room practices and WhatsApp and Messenger group activities where students were allegedly threatened, have come to light again among the general student body. He urged the Vice-Chancellor to form an independent investigation commission immediately and take punitive action against those responsible.
JCD DU unit President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos said that a new batch of students has been admitted to Dhaka University for the 2025–2026 academic session. He noted that around 80 percent of DU students come from rural areas and depend on residential facilities for a smooth academic life. However, he pointed out that the university is facing a severe accommodation crisis.
In this regard, he said that they have submitted the memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor, demanding that first-year students be allocated seats based on merit as much as possible. He also proposed that students who cannot be accommodated in the first or second phase should be provided with housing scholarships.
