Police yesterday arrested two people, including the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Demra thana unit convener, in a case filed over the recent alleged shooting at the house of SM Reza Chowdhury Selim, convener of the Demra thana BNP unit.
In separate drives in Dhaka’s Demra and Narayanganj’s Rupganj, police have also recovered three firearms, two magazines and 13 rounds of ammunition from their possession.
The arrestees are Masud Rana, 35, JCD Demra thana unit convener, and his associate Taposh, 38, said Mallik Ahasan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Wari division.
Police traced Taposh’s alleged involvement using technology and arrested him from the slope of Sultana Kamal Bridge in Demra. Based on information obtained from him, police raided a house in Barabo, Rupganj, and arrested Masud, he said.
Police recovered an old single-barrel shotgun and eight rounds of ammunition from an abandoned room there. Later, they recovered two pistols, two magazines and five rounds of ammunition from a sunshade at Taposh’s rented house, the DC added.
He said police had confirmed that the recovered firearms were used in the shooting.
On Friday dawn, eight to nine helmeted people arrived at Selim’s residence and opened fire. Selim later filed a case against eight unnamed people.
With the latest arrests, three people have so far been arrested in connection with the shooting, Mallik said, adding that police are preparing to file a separate case under the Arms Act over the firearm recoveries.
