Plot business is still going on through hill cutting in the area. Armed groups have been formed to maintain control over this business and trade. These groups reportedly maintain armed guards around the clock.
Before the killing of the RAB officer, one person had been killed in a clash between two rival groups in jungle Salimpur in October last year. The next day, two journalists were attacked and beaten by criminals while collecting news at the scene.
According to police and local residents, two criminal groups are active in the area. One group is led by Mohammad Yasin, while the other is led by Rokon Uddin.
During the tenure of the Awami League government, Yasin was known to be a follower of the then Member of Parliament from Sitakunda and Awami League leader SM Al Mamun. Since August 5, 2024, Yasin has been claiming to be a follower of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader and local MP Aslam Chaudhary.
After the murder of the RAB officer, Aslam Choudhary issued a statement to the media saying that he had no followers in Jangal Salimpur and that no member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was involved in the incident.
