Varun Grover’s cameo appearance as lyricist Majrooh is a surprise for the audience. His political leanings in real life, his protests through stand-up comedy helped the audience relate to his character in the film and it is undeniably justified.
Swastika Mukherjee, known for her bold characters, seems to be underutilized in the film. Many questions remain unanswered as to what led her to give up singing or what led to the change in her personality. Her toxicity towards her daughter distressed many, but the pain in her eyes or the motherly nature was quite evident in the character and Swastika portrayed it beautifully.
The director has been successful in taking his audience on a journey similar to that of his protagonist. Kala heard a voice of remorse in her mind for fear of Jagan lest he disturb her. The ambiguity and opacity in his head was masterfully established through a snowfall in a recording-room that deserved applause.
Despite its predictable climax, the film is worth a watch because of its loss, heartbreak, complex human emotions, enchanting music, top-notch cast and exceptionally dramatic cinematography.
Art, as a whole, is the black swan dedicated to all artistic aspirants whose passion leads them to finally meet their lonely soul and be abandoned. Anvita Dutt has indeed transformed a familiar simple story into a poetic and brilliant piece of art, which many are calling a ‘masterpiece’. let’s agree to disagree!
