On the outskirts of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, Rachel Kabu, a mother of five, earned the nickname “cat lady” from her neighbors by turning her four-bedroom home into a shelter for some 600 cats.
The 51-year-old started the Nairobi Feline Sanctuary in 2020 to provide shelter and medical care to cats. Once they are recovered, Kabu puts them up for adoption.
“Of course 95% of the space is dedicated to cats, and then I live in a corner,” said Kabu, adding that her kids love cats and support the cause. “No (the number) of cats is too many – what will limit us is space.”
