Kaliganj Upazila Health Officer Bulbul Kabir told Prothom Alo that hospitals occasionally receive stroke patients, though not that often. They refer patients with serious health conditions to Satkhira Medical College Hospital.
There is talk that cases of hypertension, heart disease and stroke are increasing among the residents of Khulna area, especially in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts. The region is suffering from potable water shortage as local water sources including rivers, canals and ponds have salinity above tolerable levels.
Repeated intake of salt beyond tolerable levels through food and water has led to increased cases of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Despite such a worrying scenario, no specific research work has been done on this issue.
