Moldovan airspace closed

Ukraine’s southwestern neighbor Moldova, which has reported several Russian missile incursions into its airspace in recent months, also reported an unidentified Russian object over its territory.

The country closed its airspace for more than an hour on Tuesday after authorities spotted a flying object that “looked like a weather balloon”.

Igor Grosu, the speaker of Moldova’s parliament, told reporters on Wednesday that the flying object that caused the country to close its airspace was from Russia.

Grosu said the balloon had crossed from Ukraine into northern Moldova.

“It’s either an (unmanned aerial vehicle), or an instrument that is taking some kind of measurement at a certain altitude,” he said.

Romania, a NATO member state that borders both Ukraine and Moldova, said on Tuesday it had grounded the jets after an aerial target resembling a weather balloon was spotted in its airspace.
