The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached the stage where reputations are made and dreams are shattered. With the group stage almost complete, the knockout bracket is rapidly taking shape.
As of Saturday, nine of the 16 rounds of 32 fixtures have already been confirmed, while the remaining seven will be decided after the final matches in Groups K and L and the ranking of the best third-placed teams.
Many of soccer’s biggest powers already know the first hurdle standing between them and the World Cup trophy, while others are still waiting for the final pieces of the bracket to fall into place.
Argentina debut against Cape Verde
Defending champions Argentina have already topped Group J and will face Cape Verde in the round of 32. Lionel Messi and Co. will begin their knockout campaign on July 4 at 4:00 am (Bangladesh time) in Miami, the city where Messi plays his club football.
On paper, this is one of the most favorable draws among the tournament favourites. However, the challenge is expected to intensify soon. A win over Cape Verde will send Lionel Messi’s team into the round of 16 against Australia or Egypt in Atlanta on July 7 at 10:00 pm (Bangladesh time).
Should all go according to plan, Argentina’s quarter-final will be Argentina’s 100th match of the 2026 World Cup, which begins on July 12 at 7:00 AM (Bangladesh Time) in Kansas City. Their most likely opponent there will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
Brazil faces dangerous Japan
Five-time champions Brazil begin their knockout campaign against Japan in one of the most interesting confirmation matches.
Although Brazil entered the match as favourites, Japan have built a reputation for upsetting football’s traditional powers with their disciplined organisation, technical quality and relentless work rate. Any lapse in concentration can prove costly.
If Brazil beats Japan, Erling Haaland’s Norway will await in the round of 16. However, Norway must first get past Ivory Coast to reach that meeting. If both teams advance, Brazil will face Norway in the round of 16 on July 5 at 2:00 am (Bangladesh time) at the New Jersey Stadium in New York.
If results continue to go their way, England could be Brazil’s opponents in the quarter-finals. England will also first have to survive both the Round of 32 and the Round of 16. Brazil’s probable quarter-final is scheduled for 3:00 am (Bangladesh time) on July 11 in Miami.
France faces a familiar European rival
France started the knockout stage against Sweden.
The two European countries know each other well, but France has one of the deepest squads of the tournament and will be expected to advance.
However, Sweden have often emerged as the underdog and are capable of frustrating even the strongest opponents.
Germany played a draw with Paraguay
Germany’s first knockout match is against Paraguay.
The four-time world champions will be keen to avoid the kind of early exits that have plagued them in recent World Cups. Paraguay’s tight defensive structure and physical approach may make the matchup more difficult than ranking alone would suggest.
Netherlands vs Morocco
Another extraordinary round-of-32 clash pits the Netherlands against Morocco.
Morocco have firmly established themselves among the world’s top players after recent World Cup performances, making this one of the most evenly balanced fixtures of the preliminary knockout rounds.
Spain, Portugal, England and other giants still waiting
Spain have booked their place in the Round of 32, but are still waiting to know who will be the runners-up in Group J.
The identity of that opponent will become clear only after the final group-stage matches are over.
The remaining heavyweight nations are still waiting for confirmation from both their opponents and their path through the bracket.
