In previous parliamentary elections, army personnel served primarily as a “striking force”.
For this election, the authorities have amended the Representation of the People Order related to national elections and included three services in the definition of law enforcement agencies.
As a result, members of the armed forces will be able to perform duties inside polling stations like other law enforcement personnel. The magisterial powers of the Army will remain in force till February 28.
Earlier, in a circular issued by the Home Ministry in January, officials had said that members of the armed forces would be deployed at nodal points and other convenient locations in every district, upazila and metropolitan area.
In coordination with the returning officers, they will conduct patrolling and other operational activities as required.
Depending on security sensitivity, they may be statically deployed at specific polling stations or, in the second phase of centre-based deployment, cover multiple centers through mobile patrolling.
Mobile and striking forces, if required, will maintain peace and order within the polling station premises. In coastal areas, the Navy will perform duties as per requirement and coordinate with the Coast Guard as per assigned areas of responsibility.
