On 25 March 1971, at 11:30 pm, Shahjahan Mia, a wireless operator, broadcast an emergency message to the entire country from the then central wireless base station of the police at Rajarbagh in Dhaka, informing all stations of the Pakistani Army attack.
In that message he said, “All base stations of East Pakistan Police are being alerted that Pakistan Army has attacked us. Ensure your safety.”
The same night, members of the police at Rajarbagh Police Lines put up the first resistance against the Pakistani forces.
Shahjahan Miyan took up position on the roof of the police headquarters building and actively participated in the resistance.
When their ammunition ran out by morning, the Pakistani army captured them and tortured them. Two days later, on 28 March, he was released and later joined the liberation war.
