Sukumar Mandal, a resident of Goriyabari village in Koyra, joined the work of repairing the embankment of Shakbaria river. He said, “If I do not work for a day, I am unable to run the family. However, I am working for a living without any wages. If we do not work, it will take a lot of time to repair this embankment. At that time, there will be no scope for living in the area.”
“The people who are responsible for repairing the embankments don't come on time. We, the daily wage labourers, are doing this job,” says Anwarul Islam, a resident of Matbaria.
Sources said that due to the rise in water level caused by cyclone Remal, water entered the area after the embankments of Water Development Board were breached at 17 points in North and South Bedkashi Union, Koyra Sadar, Amdi, Bagli, Maheshwaripur, Maharajpur of Koyra upazila on Monday morning.
When the water level in the river decreased, the local people tried their best to repair the embankment without any wages.
