* On 15 August 2003, Libya accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing in a letter to the United Nations. Libya pays over $2 billion in compensation. On 12 September, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to lift sanctions on Libya over the bombing.

* On 20 August 2009, the Scottish government released Megrahi after his lawyer said the prisoner had been diagnosed with advanced stage prostate cancer. He returns home to Libya. Megrahi dies in Tripoli on May 20, 2012, aged 60.

* On December 11, 2022, Scottish and American law enforcement officials announced that Masood was in US custody. He is to appear in a federal court in Washington DC the next day.
