Lottery system for admission of students does not seem appropriate: Education Minister

Education Minister ANM Ehshanul Haq Milan has said that the previous government had introduced lottery system for admission of students in schools, but he did not consider this method appropriate.

He said that the admission process for the next academic year will be determined after discussion with the concerned stakeholders, taking into account their opinions.

The minister made the remarks in response to a question by National Citizen Party (NCP) MP Hasnat Abdullah in Parliament on Sunday.

The 13th National Parliament met for the second consecutive day on Sunday during its first session.

The Education Minister also said that an initiative has been taken to recruit 9,000 religious teachers across the country. However, there is a complication regarding the qualifications and certification required.

He expressed hope that this issue will be resolved soon, so that the recruitment process can move forward.

Ehsanul Haq Milan further stated that religious education does not refer only to Islamic studies; Rather, the government is working to ensure that the sentiments of followers of all religions are respected in the education system.

Responding to a question by another MP SM Jahangir Hussain, the minister said the government will take a decision on setting up new public universities after considering the need and demand.

Ehsanul Haq Milan further said that currently, there are 57 public universities in the country, and the government is committed to improving their quality.

He said any decision regarding establishment of new public universities would be taken after careful consideration of national needs.
