A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to life in prison for killing his wife’s lover in Tejgaon about 14 years ago.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mahmudul Islam delivered the verdict in the case on Monday.
The suspect, Md Shahadat Hossain, has been sentenced to life in prison and fined Tk 10,000.
If he defaults on the fine, it will add another three months to his jail sentence.
Aminul Islam Sarkar, additional public prosecutor (APP) of the concerned court, said Shahadat was brought from jail to the court for the verdict. After the verdict, he was taken back to jail with a sentencing warrant.
According to the case details, Shahadat’s wife was having an extramarital affair with a man named Anis.
After learning about the matter, Shahadat forbade Anis from meeting his wife.
When Anis continued to meet with her, Shahadat grew angry. On Sept 9, 2012, Shahadat stabbed Anis to death on a footpath next to Anowara Park in Dhaka’ Tejgaon before dumping the body.
Police recovered Anis’s body when the incident was reported. Then sub-inspector (SI) of Tejgaon Police Station Md Maidul Islam filed a case against unknown persons over the killing.
Following an investigation, the police learnt that Shahadat had murdered Anis. Then SI of Tejgaon Police Station Kazi Sahan Haque submitted a charge sheet against him on Feb 23, 2013.
On May 27 of the same year, the court framed charges against the accused and ordered the trial to begin. During the trial, the judge heard statements from four out of 14 witnesses.
After hearing the defence’s arguments in the case, the court found Shahadat guilty on Monday.
