A total of 264 people died in 22 accidents in the nine months from June 2022 to March 2023 on the Bangabandhu Expressway (Dhaka-Bhanga Highway). This means that almost one death occurred every day on the expressway. The expressway has several safety flaws and an urgent road safety audit is needed.

“This essentially suggests that merely building high standard capital-intensive infrastructure is not enough to ensure safe mobility, expressway-qualified vehicles, competent drivers, standard road safety equipment/furniture and most importantly well There is a need for safe and disciplined matching enforced from traffic operating conditions,” observed a report conducted by the Accident Research Institute of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

The ARI on Sunday published the investigation report of the tragic road accident that took place on March 19 in Qutubpur area of Shibchar Upazila Bangabandhu Expressway (Dhaka-Bhanga Highway) of Madaripur.
