Mathews gives Sri Lanka unassailable lead in Afghanistan T20 series

With the help of all-rounder Angelo Mathews’ quick innings of 42 runs and two wickets, Sri Lanka won the second match by 72 runs on Monday and won the three-match T20 series against Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka finished the series with one game remaining in front of a packed crowd in Dambulla on Monday.

“It’s all about the mind,” Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran said after the match. “If you don’t execute your plans, you can’t win.”

Former captain Mathews was doubtful for the afternoon due to a hamstring strain, but the 36-year-old scored an unbeaten 42 off 22 balls with the help of four sixes and two fours.

He was particularly harsh on Azmatullah Umarzai, hitting him for three consecutive sixes in the final over.

“Whatever the team needs from me, I’m willing to adapt to the situation,” Matthews said.

His big hitting provided the required momentum and Sri Lanka scored 187 for six in 20 overs, with 34 runs coming in the last two overs.
