May Day observed

May Day is also known as international Labor Day. In 1889 it was decided from the second international socialists meeting that 1st May will be observed as international Labor Day to commemorate the Haymarket killing, where many workers died. Those labors were demanding better job condition and eight hours of working time in a day. At that time they were forced to work 10-16 hours a day.

Every year May Day is observed with renewed pledge to protect rights of working community.

May Day is a govt. holiday here in Bangladesh. President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opposition Leader  Khaleda Zia greeted the working community of the country in their separate messages. Different trade unions, labor unions, human right organizations and political parties observed the day by holding cultural programs, rallies and seminars. State run TV &, Radio and private TV & radios aired special programmes on this occasion. National dailies also brought out special supplements.
