Commuters faced a lot of trouble in buying metro passes due to faulty vending machines. The automated ticket machine at Agargaon station had stopped on the very first day of its operation on 29 December.

Later it was removed from the police station. Still, this machine does not work properly many times.

A DMTCL source said that Japanese contracting organization Marubeni and Indian L&T company supplied all electro-mechanical equipment including vending machines. They enter the information of all the currencies in the machine two years in advance.

But recently many banknotes have been changed to mark the Golden Jubilee of Independence and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Many series of those new bank notes have come in the market. Therefore, when new currency enters the vending machine, it is out of service.

DMTCL Managing Director MAN Siddiqui told Prothom Allo that 90 per cent of the vending machine issues have been resolved. In addition, they have preserved some bank notes to help passengers who may face any difficulty in purchasing tickets using the new bank notes.
