Mobile court drive finds emissions from most cars exceeding legal pollution limits

As part of the campaign, the Environment Department conducted a total of five mobile court drives in Dhaka, Ghazipur and Savar.

Officials said the standard emission limit for a vehicle is 65 HSU. But nine vehicles tested by the mobile court produced smoke that exceeded the standard.

The daytime tolerable noise limit on Manik Mia Avenue is 60 decibels, but officials recorded 110, 97, 99, 98 and 101dB noises produced by the horns used by nine cars.

A bus operated by Hanif Paribhan has also been fined for noise pollution. But bus driver Ruhul Amin claimed that his vehicle did not have a hydraulic horn.

Pointing to the horn, he said, “It is not a hydraulic horn. It is called TT horn, which produces less noise. But they (environment department officials) are claiming that it makes more noise and we A fine of Tk 3,000 has been imposed on him.”

Dhaka recently topped the list of cities on poor air quality index due to heavy dust particles found in the air at the beginning of winter.

On 22 January, the air pollution score for the capital was 271, which was reported as very unhealthy by IQAir, a Swiss group that measures air quality levels. The air pollution score was recorded at 163 AQI on Wednesday.
