The draft of the BANBEIS report shows that there were a total of 9.2 million (92 lakh) students in secondary schools in the country in 2019, a year before the Corona pandemic started. By 2023, it has reduced to 8.1 million (81.66 lakh). All these students study in 18,968 schools in the country. Of the total students, 55 percent are girls.

However, apart from secondary schools, the number of students has increased by about 180,000 (1.8 lakh) in schools and colleges that provide secondary as well as higher secondary levels.

BANBEIS has not explained the reason for the decline in the number of secondary students. However officials admit that many students have given up general education and moved to other streams during the Covid pandemic.

Due to Corona virus, the closure of all educational institutions in the country was announced from 17 March 2020. When the Corona situation improved slightly, educational institutions were reopened after a long time of 18 months. This had a big impact on education.
