Murder case: 7 accused dropped for political reasons

The names of seven accused have been withheld from a murder case registered 27 years ago in Chattogram for political reasons.

All of them are leaders and workers of the ruling Awami League and its affiliated youth organization Jubo League. But the witnesses in the court said that all seven people were involved in the incident.

MD Shahjahan, an HSC candidate of Chattogram’s Sitakund Degree College, was murdered in 1996. The hearing of that case was going on in the Public Safety Offenses Redressal Tribunal, Chattogram. In such a situation, on July 17, the court ordered to withdraw the names of the seven accused from the case. Recently the matter came to light.

Among the seven acquitted in the case are Chattogram North District Jubo League general secretary MD Shahjahan, Sitakunda Upazila Jubo League joint secretary Nurussafa, member Bijoy Chakraborty, Sitakunda Awami League member Ruhul Amin, Jubo League activists Dulal Chandra Dey, Aminul Islam and Anwar Hussain was involved.

According to court sources, the order states that the state has decided not to pursue the case against the seven accused on the application of the public prosecutor and the Ministry of Home Affairs’ memorandum dated September 9, 2013. The State side was permitted and allowed to withdraw the names of the seven accused under Section 494 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. However, the case against other accused Alauddin and Papan Chandra Dey will continue.
