The death toll from a landslide at an unregulated jade mine in a remote part of Myanmar has risen to at least 31, rescue workers said on Wednesday, while eight people were still missing.
The disaster occurred on Sunday outside Hpakant township in northern Kachin after torrential rains and floods ravaged the area over the weekend.
Jade mining is lucrative in Myanmar because of high demand from neighboring China, but the unregulated industry is plagued by frequent worker deaths.
“We found six more bodies this morning,” a rescue worker told AFP on condition of anonymity. He told that eight people are missing, whose search is on.
Rescue workers dug through thick mud to find bodies, while others were found floating in the water.
