The firing came from a Myanmar trawler entering Bangladesh's maritime boundary when the speedboat reached Golgara area in Badarmokam of Shah Porir Island on the Teknaf-St Martin naval route.
Speedboat Owners Association president and St Martin Union Council Ward-3 member Khurshid Alam confirmed this to Prothom Alo.
Locals said that Badarmokam is just half a kilometre away from Myanmar's Naikhongdia Point, where an unidentified armed group has set up camp. This group is not allowing service trawlers and speedboats to operate on this route.
