When asked about the incident, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner (North) Amirul Islam told Prothom Alo, “There was information that the auto-rickshaw was being used to transport smuggled goods. However, we are verifying the accuracy of that information.”

“We are also investigating whether the authorities concerned were informed before the operation as per procedure. There are established rules governing police operations and searches. We are taking the matter seriously and investigating,” he said.

The officer also said, “There are specific procedures in place to carry out such an operation. Based on our discussions with those involved, at the moment it appears that a lapse may have occurred. Those responsible will face departmental action.”

According to police sources, Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam of Khulshi police station, who is currently on leave in Dhaka, informed SI Shafiqul Islam that a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw would arrive with the smuggled gold.

Acting on that information, Shafiqul launched an operation in the Lalkhan market area. Monirul reportedly claimed that he had received intelligence from a law enforcement agency.

After learning that Naeem Hasan had allegedly been assaulted by the police and taken to the police station, his father Mahbubul Alam reached there in the night.
