Akhtar also commented that although Shahabuddin stepped down citing ill health, he included irrelevant historical narratives in his resignation letter, which was essentially an attempt to create a ‘safe exit’ for himself.

Criticizing the BNP in this context, Member of Parliament Akhtar Hossein said that the BNP had been informed long ago that Shahabuddin was ineligible for the presidency. However, instead of impeaching him at that time, the BNP helped strengthen his position by involving him in various social and state functions.

The NCP leader stressed that although the immunity had earlier protected Shahabuddin from legal proceedings due to his office, his resignation did not give him any legal protection.
