A recent study by IEDCR (Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research) and icddr,b (International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) has shown that nearly 45 percent population in the capital have experienced asymptomatic Covid-19. That means they were infected with coronavirus but didn’t develop any symptoms. Only blood test to detect antibody has confirmed their infection.
This recent study was backed by US-based charity organization USAID and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. According to their study, three third of the slum population in the capital is already infected. Gene analysis suggests that coronavirus infection may have started in mid-February this year, though official data shows the first case was detected on 8th March. Twenty-four percent of the detected are above the age of sixty.
Researchers said they have randomly selected 25 wards from 129 wards in the city corporation area. Specimens were collected from April to mid-July and specimens from eight slums were collected from mid-July to the end of August.
Researchers said these findings will be useful in controlling the pandemic, treatment, and immunization. These recent study findings were revealed at a Dhaka hotel when many experts are expecting a second wave of pandemic during the winter.
